I am only 13 yrs old and this is chapter 1 of my book.
It’s morning. The sun is peeking from the horizon. The spring air is fresh, and the grass is damp from the morning dew. The earth slowly awakens from the peaceful night before. Jake Clemons is always up in time to watch the sunrise. He’s up before the rooster crows.
He got dressed quickly to watch the sunrise. He put on his red shirt and some blue jeans. Everyone was still asleep so he had to be quiet. He tiptoed down the hallway. He passed Jamie’s room. Jamie was his 7 year old sister.
After he passed everyone’s rooms, he hurried down the stairs and out the door. He jogged towards the big red barn. He ran through all the hay and to the ladder leading up to the loft. He climbed up the silver ladder and jumped onto the loft. Hay was spread out throughout the loft. Jake crawled towards the loft window and opened it. Then he sprawled out on the hay and gazed at the sunrise.
Watching the sunrise was a good time for Jake to think, and get his thoughts together. It was his only moment of peace during the day. He couldn’t possibly think in the day with all the commotion from his little sister, and all the work that had to be done, there was just no time.
“Cock-o-doodle-doo!” the rooster cried. It was time to get back to the house and cook breakfast. Jake usually made breakfast because everyone was just waking up at the sound of the rooster.
This morning he cooked scrambled eggs, toast, and he heated up some leftover sausage from the morning before. Everyone got seated at the table. It was delightful meal and got the day started off.
His parents usually watched the news right after breakfast, and then they get ready for work. Apparently they left it on, because Jaime was watching it when they got done watching it. He flipped the switch to turn the TV off.
“Hey!” Jaime whined.
“Jaime, you shouldn’t be watchin’ this stuff. It gives you nightmares.” Jake had already gone through experience. A few weeks ago they were watching the news and it was talking about some guy who escaped from the county jail near Chester. Jaime couldn’t go to sleep that night because she thought he would come and get her while she was sleeping.
“Fine,” she scoffed.
As soon as she left the room, he turned it back on.
“There is currently a prison escapee on the loose. He stole the security guard’s keys and escaped. He goes by the name of Greg Richards.”
It showed a picture of the escapee. He had a brown buzz cut, a goatee, and his ear pierced. He had a tan. He looked to be in about his late 20’s. The news anchor continued with the story, “He was last seen driving a black Dodge Ram. If you have any information about this man, please call the police.”
“Jake, turn that off. You’ll probably have nightmares just like Jaime.” His mother was always comparing him to Jaime like that.
“Yes ma’am.” Jake turned off the TV.
His parents left for work about eight. They usually got home about 5:00. His mom worked at the grocery store as the manager and his dad worked at the local bank.
There was nothing to at the house. Jaime asked Jake if he could play a game with her. He didn’t mind but she wanted to play some of the stupidest games.
“Okay Jaime, what do ya wanna play?” Jake asked reluctantly.
“Let’s play hide and go seek!” Jaime shouted. Jake never argued against having to play hide and go seek. It was one of his favorite games. He usually let Jaime hide otherwise she would whine and cry.
They ended up playing hide and seek for hours. His parents finally arrived home. He could now go do something instead of playing with Jaime all day.
Jake figured he’d ride is bike. It was in terrible condition with worn out tires, red and rusted paint job, and the seat torn up. But he didn’t care. It was his only option to get away from the world. It made him feel free. He rode it everywhere around town. Of course the town was small enough to see everything in less than an hour on a bicycle.
The town was called Chester. It’s a population of about 1200 people. Chester has a bunch of old buildings from a long time ago. But most of those are abandoned. People just had a hard time keeping business in Chester. A whole bunch of people moved, which caused a lot of businesses to move, also.
As he was riding his bike, he heard some bells from a distance. Not like the bells you hear at Christmas time, but big bells. They made such a noise that the whole town could hear them. Maybe even the whole county.
He decided to check and see where the bells were coming from. He followed the sound of the bells. It took about 2 minutes to get to where they were. They were coming from some large brick building with a white steeple. At the top of the steeple, there was a small cross. What kind of building has bells, and a steeple with a cross? He wondered. He decided to take a look inside.
He walked down the aisle of red carpet. There were people sitting in long stretched pews. Everyone was dressed nice and elegant. He felt like an outcast with the raggedy clothes he had on.
“Excuse me, young man. Why are you wearing such clothes?” an older woman asked him. He tried to speak but words wouldn’t budge. He was embarrassed.
“Young man?” she said.
He ran to the back of room. As he tried to get out the door, a man spoke. Jake turned around and saw a man in the front of the room. This man was tall. He looked to be in his 30’s. He was wearing a white robe with a green stripe down the middle.
“Thank you everyone for being here tonight,” he said speaking through a microphone.
“I am the new preacher. My name is Dan Miller. I have recently moved here from Alabama, with my daughter, Carley, and my wife, Joyce,” he stated gesturing to his family in the front row.
Carley had shoulder length brown hair. She had the most amazing blue eyes Jake had ever seen. She looked nothing like her mom, Joyce.
Jake figured he would stay and listen what Dan had to say. He didn’t have to be home until 8 and it was only 6:45. He went and got seated in the last pew. He paid attention to this preacher as he spoke.
“God has a great amount of power. He is so big. He can do anything!” Dan exclaimed raising his hands in the air.
“Anything?” Jake whispered to himself.
Dan preached for the next hour about this God person. He said God was the man who created this very earth, and created us to live in it. Jake couldn’t wait to tell his parents about God.
Jake glanced at his watch. It read at exactly 7:56. Jake was supposed to be home at 8:00 sharp. Jake jumped on his bike and sped away. His house was about 1 mile out of Chester, so it took him about 10 minutes to get home, but at the speed he was going, Jake could’ve swore he got there in less than 5 minutes. He jumped off the bike and ran to the house. He got to the door, swung it open and ran inside. He tried to be sneaky. He didn’t want his parents to know he had come in late. He completely forgot about the door making a ruckus every time it closed. He raced to door to try to stop it from making the noise.
“Jake is that you?” his father had asked from the living room. Jake was so exhausted from the ride home, he could barely speak.
“Yes, dad,” he said panting.
“Where in the hell have you been, Jake? You were supposed to be home 5 minutes ago.” His father was really strict about being home on time. He wanted to say he was just outside for a bit, but he couldn’t stand lying to his father.
“I was at a church,” Jake said looking down at his shoes.
“A church? Why were you at this church?” his father asked him with and eyebrow raised.
“Well, I was listening to this guy talk about God,” Jake explained innocently.
“My gosh Jake! There is no God. People just say that so they can have something to believe in. Now go upstairs and finish your homework.”
Jake ran to his room and went to his bed. He lay there, thinking. His dad was usually right about stuff. Maybe there was no God. Maybe Dan was full of himself and didn’t know what he was talking about. He listened to a complete stranger and believed it. His dad was right, there was no God.
“Jake! Dinner is ready!” his mom called from downstairs.
He headed downstairs at the pace of a gazelle. He was so caught up in all this God stuff he almost forgot about his stomach. He sat down and as soon as he was about to attack the food, his mom smacked his hand.
“Not until everyone is seated,” she said as she was putting the food on the table. He looked around and everyone was seated, except his sister. He almost forgot about Jaime, who was still upstairs in her room.
“Jake, go upstairs and get your sister,” his mom ordered from across the table.
Jake rushed upstairs and headed towards Jamie’s room.
Her room was all pink. She had a pink bedspread, pink lamp, and a pink chair. Her room was also a mess. Toys were everywhere. There was so much clutter, that you couldn’t even see the floor.
Jake hopped everywhere around the room trying not to step on anything. He finally reached Jaime, who was playing with her dolls.
“Hey, sis. It’s time for supper,” he said tapping her on the shoulder.
“Okay,” she replied.
They both headed downstairs and got seated at the dinner table. Jake and Jaime sat across from each other. His mom and dad sat at the ends of the table like the queen and king in old medieval times.
Today’s dinner was his mom’s specialty, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes and gravy, and grilled pork chops. His mom sure did make a mean batch of mashed potatoes.
Jake could finally start eating since everyone was seated.
“So are you two ready for the first day of school tomorrow?” his mother asked.
“Yes ma’am!” Jaime called out.
Jake just sat there, not knowing what to say.
“Jake? What about you? Are you ready for school tomorrow?” his mother asked eyeing him from across the table.
“Uh. Yes ma’am,” he lied when the truth was he wasn’t ready for the first day of school.
Last year, his best friend moved away because his mom and dad got better jobs. It was a difficult time because he tried to make new friends but everyone ignored him. He hoped he would have better luck this year.
The dinner was so delicious. For dessert, they had homemade vanilla ice cream. Jake was so stuffed afterwards.
Jake cleaned up the dinner table and washed the dishes. Afterwards he went upstairs to his room.
His room wasn’t all decorated like Jaime’s room. It was more conservative. He just had off-white walls with the occasional artwork that Jaime had drawn for him on them.
He grabbed his notebook and an ink pen from his desk. He got on his bed and began writing. Writing was Jake’s passion. He could write about absolutely anything. He always carried his notebook and his pen in case anything that came to mind, he could write down. He glanced at his watch. It read 9:27. Jake figured he’d get to bed at a decent hour. He put his notebook and pen under the mattress. Then he turned off the lights and went to bed.
Is this good?
It's a good start. I suggest making the sentences less choppy. You could possibly blend them in together more than having a ton of small statements. But good job! :)
Reply:There's no way I'm gonna read that now; I have enough reading to do. But if I finish I'll read this. But I read a sentence and it said "the dinner was so delicious" it sounds kinda dry and robotic
Reply:WOW
That is a lot to read. Are you sure you don't want to put this in the heavy readers section?
Reply:Sounds really good! You're talented!!!
Reply:Sorry, I can't read. It's too long.
Reply:i want more!! encore encore!!!! i will give u a star but u must send me more!
Reply:My god, you sure write alot!
Its good but not really a genuine story, more like an adaptation from R.L Stein
Reply:ha they blocked the c.o.c.k in “****-o-doodle-doo!”
Reply:Honestly? For your age that is good, but you need to open the first paragraph with a bit more 'umph' - it starts without catching the reader's attention, it's too wishy-washy.
Other than that, you've done a real good job with it, plenty of descriptive writing, not overly chatty between the characters.
If this is the chapter in it's entirety, read through it again and tidy it up a little and make it flow - too many small sentences, where other punctuation would have been a better choice.
Keep it up, you have talent.
Reply:Keep at it babe, you're on to something there!
Reply:Too much to read, toots.
Reply:That's a really good start. Some of your sentences are too choppy, somebody already mentioned that though. Work on some transition sentences and you'll be in good shape.
What you also have is too much going on in a little space of time. The ideas in the first chapter could be expanded to have more content and become two.
It's really funnny. There's a Chester near where I live and there's a state prison there! Kind of ironic...
But keep writing. You are on to a good thing here.
Reply:wow a novel.......a star for that kind of effort
Reply:sounds good so far keep up the good work!

My 15 week old kitten died suddenly. Any idea why?
I got the kitten's mother from a friend. He found it in the country and I took it in. It was small and I thought it was a kitten. Well, a couple weeks pass and we realize the kitty is pregnant. She only has 1 kitten in the litter. The kitten does well and everything is going fine until last nite at about 1 am the kitty is meowing extremley loud. I find her and her face was swollen, bubbles around her mouth and she couldn't balance herself. This cat has never left my apartment. I did waterproof a pair of shoes that night, but the vet said the shots he gave her would have opened her bronchial paths because he said her tongue was purple which indicated poor oxygen flow. He said he suspected she got poisoned somehow. We do have quite a few exotic plants around which the kitty liked to climb up and eat the leaves off of. The vet also gave her a pain pill, and two shots then said she needed to stay at least a night. He called about 3 hours later and said the cat was dead.
My 15 week old kitten died suddenly. Any idea why?
There are thousands and thousands and thousands of poison plants (to cats). Yes, it was probably a plant that got it. It may get the cat next. Here is a website that lists plants poisonous to animals.
http://vet.purdue.edu/depts/addl/toxic/b...
Also, make sure that all of your household cleaners are out of reach to cats. And any pesticides.
Reply:This is so sad, and I am so sorry. It sounds like some sort of poisoning. Shame on whoever said shame on you. It is not your fault. Don't let idiots make you feel bad. Poor sweet baby. Give yourself time to grieve, and then get a new kitten. Keep plants out of the way. There is no way to truly know what killed the sweet baby.
Reply:Sorry to hear about your cat. ((HUGS)) It probably was the plants.
Reply:im sorry about your kitty:( but it was prolly food poisiong.. do you have ne mean neighbors that dont like cats? also anything around you that the cat can get into including the neighbors stuff it could of gotten sick most likely from some kind of fertilizer. thats what happened to my cat
Reply:You should get the vet to do an autopsy if possible! if it was a toxic reaction to a plant then it would probably show in a liver tissue test!
Reply:Obviously there could be several reasons here BUT how can a vet perform procedures to attempt to help her and after she dies not be able to give you an explanation!
Id say the vet mis diagnosed and hopefully didn't charge you w/o telling you how she died.
Point being, my finger would be pointed back at the vet and how he treated/mistreated (which is very common)
A vet is suppose to be a professional with animals and if they treat the animal it should be in a way that addresses the problem which he never defined AND after she died he should have been able to determine what exactly it was.
Its very easy for vets to over medicate especially if he knew she may have been poisoned.
I mean seriously the guy seems like somewhat of a quack.
No results of any kind after how much $$.

How do I get my 8 month old lab to stop chewing up EVERYTHING?
His chewing has increased recently- has ruined 3 pairs of shoes, remote control, cell phone, numerous barbie dolls (his favorite), ate a candle, even demolishes his own toys and often eats the pieces. I try to keep things put up- but he even will climb on the furniture to get to things that are out of reach. I don't know what else to do. Please help- replacing my child's dolls is becoming expensive and I worry if he continues to eat the materials he could be harmed.
How do I get my 8 month old lab to stop chewing up EVERYTHING?
Labs are world-class chewers and they need things to chew on. They can't help it..it's just instinct.
You need to get him things that he can use to satisify his chewing urge.
Those big dog bones from the animal shop are good. Don't get a butcher shop bone, though, they can splinter.
My dogs also LOVE their Kong toys..and you can put treats or peanut butter in them and that keeps them busy for hours.
There are very few toys my dogs can play with without tearing them up.
Those rope bone tug toys are also good, for a while, anyway.
Don't bother with squeaky toys. Your dog will chew them up just to get at the squeaker.
On, and as for getting on the furniture, your dog is not well-trained enough to be running around the house on his own and stealing things. Next, he'll EAT the furniture. Trust me. My lab ate up a whole section of carpeting when he was a pup.
You need to confine him to a room where he can't do too much harm when you aren't able to watch him. When you are able to be with him, you have to teach him the meaning of the word no.
Keep a leash on him. When he goes to get on the furniture, tug it and tell him NO. Never, ever allow him on the furniture, because he'll take that as a sign of equality with you. You are the boss.
And keep things out of sight. Out of sight, out of mind. If your daughter's Barbies are in a toy chest with a lid sealed, your dog won't get to them. If your shoes are in the closet with the door shut, he can't chew them.
And if he's chewing on something, yell NO and take it away from him, even if by then it's ruined. And then give him something he's allowed to chew on and praise him for chewing on that instead.
Oh, and my vet says labs don't have brains until they're about two years old..and then it's like the mailman suddenly delivered them.
My lab's four years old now and he's an angel. My shepherd mix is two, and she's pretty good too. However, they are still known to chew up a dog toy or frisbee now and then. So hang in there. Your dog's just doing what's normal to him..you just have to be smarter.
Reply:we have a lab that used to do the same thing until we got him some pressed rawhides. they dont look like regular rawhides, they are actually formed by using little bits of rawhides encased in a really hard shell
Reply:Welcome to Lab world. Sounds like he's bored. An 8 month old need lots of stimulation and activity. He needs to be confined to certain rooms in the house when you are not with him.
I'm sure he has toys and chew things that belong to him. One thing to do is to get a Kong toy - the black ones are made for large dogs and are almost indestructible- fill it with good stuff and when you catch him chewing something he shouldn't , tell him to Leave it and trade for the Kong Toy.
I would definitely enroll him in a dog class. It does wonders for you and your dog. You will learn how to interact with him and give him the proper cues to do what you expect.
Also, be mindful that labs tend to maintain their puppy ways for quite some time - up to 2 years or sometimes longer. They are great dogs, but desparately need training, activity and positive attention.
Good luck to both of you.
Reply:I have a 3 month old black lab and its the same way, everytime I see him he is chewing on something. You just have to keep saying no and crate him when he is bad so he knows that he gets punished for chewing.
Reply:I have a black Lab, and when we first got him he was about 8mnths old too. It just takes time. He doesn't chew like crazy anymore. I think it stops when he turns one. Just lock him up in a crate when you leave, and when you're not going to be able to keep a close eye on him. My dog loved chewing up sticks, GIJoe dolls, and any stuffed animals. We would see the eyes lying out in the yard the next day! It should be over soon! Just hold in there!
Reply:Ah yes, welcome to owning a lab - They eat everything and anything they can get their paws on! Most items will make they're way out the other end in 24 hours time, just make sure you get him to a vet right away if isn't going #2 regularly because he might have something blocking his intestines.
You can try Bitter Apple spray, but my lab likes that too (He eats apples off the ground under the tree). Or try a dab of Tabasco on anything you don't want him to touch. Otherwise, the best solution is training, training and more training.
Reply:2 things here to do. #1. Remove the accessibility factor. Don't leave these around that the dog chews. Put shoes in a closet or shut your bedroom door. Make sure the children put the toys away and out of reach of the dog. #2. Give your dog plenty of his own toys. Labs are notorious chewers, and even if you take temptations away and leave him no/not enough toys, he WILL find something-the corner of a couch, a chair leg, etc. A variety of different type toys need to be available(stuffed toys, rawhides, nylabones, ropes, etc) and if you see him chewing on something hes not supposed to, take that away and offer a toy instead- when he takes it, PRAISE him! My dog was very "mouthy" as a puppy, grabbing at our hands etc, and every time he did, i put a toy in his mouth. Now at age 2, when he gets excited and wants to play, he looks around and finds a toy and come back to us- its become a habit for him.
Reply:Oh the memories.... LOL!
Dogs basically chew out of boredom. Like others have said, buy durable toys (like Kongs) that the dog can't destruct. Some have the incredible ability to demolish those too (amazingly enough). Try to take your dog for a walk daily. I know in some places it is near impossible now, but try to get your dog out to release some energy.
The key is to redirect their focus on something else. Kongs with peanut butter inside %26amp; nylabones are my favorite. Also, if your dog is going to be unattended, make sure you have a crate or somewhere you can confine him so he isn't left alone to destroy more things!

Reply:It's almost impossible to get a puppy to stop chewing, especially at that age. He is most likely teething. The best thing to do is to get him some chew toys of his own. Puppies get bored fast, so make sure you have plenty to keep him occupied. You can also try to keep him isolated. Try kennelling him when you're not home. This will keep him from harming himself when you're not there to watch him. He will out grow of it soon.
Reply:labs are well known for chewing.you could crate himwhen you are out or use a larged roofed pen in out for too long then keep a close eye on the pup when you are in

All you can do is try to keep doors shut and things put up. When he climbs to get something tell him NO! (mine goes and lays behind the couch when he gets in trouble)
Reply:They should come with warning labels. Some are much worse than others. My last few haven't been too bad until my 8 month Nita the last week or 2. I am going to give up leaving her loose in the house when I am not watching. some you can't. A mousetrap is very effective in making a dog leave something alone. Most dogs will stay away from anywhere they were surprised by a snap. The best part is that it is not you that is correcting the dog. It works whether you are around or not. The mousetrap is very patient and is always on task as long as you reset it.
Better than mousetraps when you aren't around is the crate. Other dogs may
not be as bad as the young Labs I am plagued with. Still your house and dog
will be much safer with the dog in a crate when you are away. The dog may be
happier in its den than loose in the house. It relaxes, it feels safe in its
den. It rests, the body slows down reducing the need for water and relieving
its self. Dogs that have been crated all along do very well. Many of them
will rest in their crates even when the door is open. I think the plastic
ones give the dog more of a safe, enclosed den feeling. They are harder for
dogs to open too. Metal ones can be put in a corner or covered with
something the dog can't pull in and chew. Select
a crate just big enough for the full grown dog to stretch out in.
Leave it some toys. Perhaps a Kong filled with peanut butter. Don't leave
anything in the crate the dog might chew up. It will do fine without even any
bedding. You will come home to a safe dog and a house you can enjoy.
Accidents and damaged possessions are the fault of whoever was watching the puppy. When you are watching it, immediately correct it as soon as it goes for anything except its own toys. In a quiet, but firm voice ''Bad dog, its name drop!''. Gently remove what ever and replace it with one of her toys, or if older, hold eye contact until the puppy drops it.
A dog that has not been crated since it was little, make take some work.
Start out just putting its toys and treats in the crate. Praise it for going
in. If you have been able to trust it with any bedding, put that in the crate.
Feed it in the crate. This is also an easy way to maintain order at feeding
time for more than one dog.
Reply:I had a lab for 11 years, she just recently passed. I can assure you that he will grow out if it. You have to remember that he is still a puppy and thats what puppies do. Instead of toys try giving him those really large bones (you can find at petsmart or any pet store) that should take him days to chew on. It will keep him occupied. In the meantime, try putting him in a kennel when you leave so he wont have access to shoes and toys when you're gone. Good luck....they are wonderful pets, I miss her so much!

Reply:Oh boy do I know that feeling. The first day I brought my puppy home he age a pair of shoes through my backpack. You may need to put him in a area where he cannot get at things when you are not home to watch him and correct the behavior. If you do not see him in the act it does not good to correct the behavior when you come home and find it because they can't remember what they have done. If you can put him outside while gone or in a locked room. ALso the best way is to keep things out of the range or keep doors closed when not int he room with the puppy. Labs love to chew so I would suggest some chongs, these are really durble and you can put treats in them that keeps the dog busy for quite some time. Peanut butter does really good in a chong. I found that worked best with our chewer and in time he may or may not grow out of it. Lab are natural chewers and some don't grow out of them.

Good luck!

Four humans two dogs what should I do? I cant do it all.?
I'm a mom of two. There is four of us. We have two dogs, that I dislike a lot. They are big and I am allergic to the dogs. Ever since my husband and I moved in with each other the dogs got jealous and destroyed our house, but my husband refuses to let one of them leave, because he has had one of them for 6 years. One is 8 and the other is a 10 month old. These dogs have destroyed carpets, couches, chairs, shoes, floor, and pooped and peed all over the place. We can't leave the dogs out so we lock one in the bathroom and the other in the laundry room. If we left the 8 yr old one out she would climb all over our son's bed getting it dirty and sucking on the comforter. I have caught her at night destroying the bathroom door, and pooping all over our things. The other one, destroyed our laundry room floor and chewed our gas line to the hot water heater. It's horrible. I am highly allergic to the new dog. I have tiny scabs on my body from stratching and benadryl doesn't work. What to do?
Four humans two dogs what should I do? I cant do it all.?
Bless your heart....sounds like you are about at your wits end. These dogs have some serious behavioral issues! Even if dog training could help, you are still allergic to the dog. If you want to keep your sanity, you gotta convince your husband that the dogs need to go to another good home. The dogs are being confined anyway, so what is the difference? You should find a dog you can both agree to....a pug is a suggestion. They can be expensive, but they are great family dogs with great personalities. They were bred to be lap dogs and that is just what they are...lap dogs. They just want to be loved and needed...laid back and relaxed. We just got our 2nd one...wish I could have 100 of them. In any case, best of luck to you and your family!
Reply:Clearly you can't live like that.
Tell him it's you or the dogs.
Reply:I would strongly suggest that you get the dogs obedience trained or something like that. It sounds that they are bored, from the destructive behavior. How old are your kids? It might be good for them to interact w/ the dogs more: play catch, etc. Maybe they could even brush the dogs if they are not allergic, as that will get rid of some of the loose hair and dandruff. If you can afford it, send them (dogs) to the groomer or perhaps update the quality of the food, as that can make a difference.
As for the allergies, I've heard that there are some shots you can take... did you ask your doctor about options yet?
I just want to say that I greatly admire your husband for standing his ground and keeping the dogs. Marriage is a compromise; you don't have to like the dogs, but it is a package deal. He's had one of them for 6 years, and more than likely considers it a loved family member. If you put pressure on him to get rid of his friend, some hostility might result. The 8 year old is considered a senior, and if she is having problem with her bowel control, it might be a medical issue. Take her to the vet if you can. Do you even know for sure that they destroying the house out of jealousy or is it just lack training and socialization? Dogs are social creatures, they need a pack and a pack leader.
If I didn't impart enough information, please visit the message boards at www.petfinder.com. There are very knowledgeable people there... in fact, I know that some are allergic to their dogs/cats/etc, yet still somehow manage to do rescue and foster. Perhaps they can give you some more advice.
Once again, please take more proactive measures to ensure that everyone is happy. Please don't give up too soon and dump them in a shelter, as shelters are already full of dogs on death row. They don't deserve that. Thank you for asking for help. :-)

What do you think about this?
THE CHOICE
I will never see a rainbow
Or count the stars above.
I will never watch the sun's evening glow
Or know a mother's gentle love.
My daddy will never hold me close
Or push me high on a backyard swing.
He'll never tell me secrets that noone else knows
Or hear my sweet, childish voice sing.
Mommy will never tell me she loves me
Or tuck me in and sing me to sleep.
She'll never watch me climb a tree
Or pray to Jesus my soul to keep.
I will never learn to tie my shoes
Or play baseball with my dad all day.
Mommy will never kiss my bruise
Or wipe all of my tears away.
I will never see the moon so bright
Or give my mom a pretty flower.
I'll never see an eagle in flight
Or know the ocean's awesome power.
All these things and more besides
I will never see or do.
In my mommy's womb I died
'Cause she had the right to choose.
What do you think about this?
Well, you asked my opinion so here goes. God gave us free will. Free will is for us to make choices. I don't agree it's alright for a woman to have an abortion. I am definitely pro life. That is because of my faith. What is in this poem, to me, is a bunch of crap from an infant's point of view.
This is describing what we as living people would think an unborn child would be saying. I believe that a mother would feel horrible guilt later on in life after having an abortion. I know women who have. BUT that infant, that soul, is blameless and will be in heaven for eternity. I believe that infant would be in eternal worship and not have any regrets being in heaven. I believe babies who are miscarried too are blameless and will spend eternity in worship.
I think women should be against abortion due to conviction God has put on their hearts, not what people 'propose' a fetus or infant would say or think.
Just remember, YOU asked.
Reply:That is ridiculous - a fetus is a fetus.
Why then are we eating eggs, fish and meat, killing animals and talking about trying to stop abortion? Abortion is a personal choice - the baby born may have
- teenagers as parents who will be inadequate parents and perhaps end up having a child who is a drug addict or a social misfit
- a child of a rape victim
- a down's syndrom baby
- or even a baby whose parents didn't want him but were forced to have him because of the law (and he will always be unwanted and unloved, maybe?)
- a single mom who is trying to make ends meet because the dad conveniently disapppeared
Reply:This is a romanticized, emotion-laden, manipulative poem meant to wrench the heart and feelings and to persuade people, women specifically, not to get an abortion because it is "selfish". It is from the perspective of the soul of an aborted fetus who regrets not being born. And it's a piece of complete and utter crap.
Notice first how many strong emotion words are in there. While the actual verbs themselves are weak and rather pedestrian (see, count, watch, know, etc.), the nouns have strong connotations. A rainbow in Christian iconography represents God's promise never to flood the earth again. Counting stars represents a childish activity to pass the time as a well as making wishes. There are other emotion-laden words like secrets, tuck me in, pray, learn, kiss.
This is all meant to make a person who has gotten an abortion feel condemned, wronged, and ashamed, as if she has deprived someone of a life, and this is false thinking. A fetus is a developing bunch of cells incapable of existing outside the womb. A fetus has no thoughts or feelings that modern medicine knows of. Therefore if a woman chooses to abort, she is not aborting a developed, sustainable life, but rather a fetus, a bunch of cells that may become human or may not, because about 25% of all pregnancies end in spontaneous abortions or miscarriages. The poem is also meant to serve as a warning to other women of what such a "bad" moral decision would mean to the soul that they aborted. This also is false because disembodied souls don't have feelings, and can't communicate directly with us on any plane that we know of.
Ultimately this poem and other ilk like it condemn a woman's taking control of her sexuality and of her reproductive choices, and this is wrong, backward and fearful. Every woman knows whether she wants children or not. If a woman does want children, then she also has the right to say how many and at what interval she spaces them. To deprive a woman of that essential right is to rob her of her full humanity and her womanhood. Everyone wants the freedom to make deep, intimate, important life decisions, and no one wants other people to take away this highly necessary freedom.
People who write and appreciate this kind of romantic claptrap and manipulation often don't finesse the finer points of what it means to be selfish, and they don't understand how to make a moral decision. Selfishness is NOT always bad. Taking care of your body, your health, your mind and your emotions is literally selfish, because you are caring for yourself. Bad selfishness occurs only when you retreat within yourself in fear and deliberately ignore the needs of others. And an abortion is selfish, but in a way that people of limited intelligence and moral reasoning may not understand: a woman who aborts is making the best choice she can from limited, unpleasant options. This is NEVER done lightly and it is NEVER done without significant thought, planning, and deep rumination.
It is better to abort than to bring an unwanted child into being. It is better to abort if a woman has significant physical, emotional, mental or financial issues which will directly, negatively impact her and her child's life. It is better to abort if a woman simply does not want to be pregnant at all. All of these decisions are selfish to a certain extent because the woman actually takes her own mind, heart, emotions, talents, financial resources, plans, hopes and dreams for herself and her future into consideration. She does not put herself last or second; she puts herself first, as a human being.
We have very romanticized notions about what women should do, how they should act and how they should make decisions, when reality paints a very different picture. That we have a foster care system at all points out that a great many women DIDN'T fall in love with their babies after birth; that parenting does NOT come naturally; and it's NOT different when it's your own. Everyone at a certain point in their life should be able to distinguish between romantic ideals and pragmatic reality.
See this poem for the manipulative twaddle that it is, and dismiss its inherently flawed logic and gawpish, maudlin sentimentality. Women of the world, dare to be positively selfish. Put yourself first. Think about your hopes, dreams and talents that you have to offer the world. Make an informed, thoughtful choice to have children or not, based on your own inner compass.
Cheers, K (teacher, traveler, thinker, feminist, liberal, poet and mortal enemy of maudlin sentimentality)
