How Did You Babyproof Your House?

My toddler is ALL over the place, climbing chairs and tables, eating the remotes, grabbing my shoes, putting just about anything in her mouth.

How Did You Babyproof Your House?
To me the essential things were:

- Get fliplocks or chainlocks to all doors that exit your home.

- Outlet covers

- Gates at the bottom and top of the stairs. The one on the bottom can be pressure mounted, but the one on top needs to be hardware mounted.

-Lock cabinets (we used the magnetic "Tot Locks"), especially any cabinets with cleaners or medicine.

-Put anything you don't want your child to get into in a locked cabinet.

-Brace large bookshelves and dressers to the wall (look for earthquake kits).

-Window guards for all windows on the second story.

-Wind up any blind cords.

As for your shoes, keep them in the closet or garage. Chairs and tables? You'll just have to watch her.
Reply:One thing people miss often is securing bookshelves etc. from falling. You can get an L shaped metal piece that can secure it to the wall...

also, supervision is key...
Reply:YES ! Sure did ! that way if eveything dangerous is put up they can run and play freely! its their home too lol. i put up everything that could harm him and things he shouldnt be in . my son is almost 3 and he has run of the house without any harm.....his room is fair game he can have anything in there....and my breakables are out of reach and by the time he can reach them he will know it is not allowed. good luck
Reply:Get baby gates and barriers to enclose her into a specific play area. Make sure it is a large enough space to play and explore. Be extra vigilant about small toys and pieces of toys on the floor that can become a potential choking hazzard. Kids also like to put things in their ears and up their nose too, so often check! Put shoes away in a closed clset or spot high enough off the floor. You might need to reposition your chairs so that she can't climb on them, or push them around. You also might need to permanently remove some furniture that could also be a danger to the child. We had a marble %26amp; glass cocktail table that I sold on Craigslist in order to make my living room safe. Obviously cover the electrical outlets. Instead of chewing on a remote, get some teething toys. But above all, always monitor your child. That's always the best way to protect her.
Reply:i don't baby proof .You should teach your toddler what they can and can not have i did and have no broken things and a daughter that can go anywhere with me and be trusted not to touch things. She's 17 months .
Reply:Why in the world are YOU ALLOWING your child to behave this way................... do you think it's cute or something............GET A GRIP AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After all, YOU are the parent!!!

I NEVER 'baby proofed/child proofed my home!!! I applied discipline, provided play areas and never had a problem (mother of 3),

The only area which was an issue was the kitchen. I always had them at my feet when I was trying to prepare meals. I finally cleared out a lower cabinet and only placed plastic ware and pots/pans in there. They knew this was 'their' cabinet and they never bothered anything else (even stuff under the sink).
Reply:I put up gates and closed doors. I took all breakables out of the living area and his rooms, and in those rooms he had free rein
